Tucked away from the tourist-heavy paths of Amsterdam and Utrecht, Eindhoven is a dynamic hub of creativity, culture, and unexpected corners that invite exploration. With its design-forward spirit and offbeat charm, the city offers an exciting (and affordable) alternative to the Netherlands’ more familiar destinations.

Let’s dive into those quirky spots—where design meets adventure, without the crowds in the way. Ready? Let’s go!

Authentic lifestyle

Eindhoven isn’t your typical Dutch postcard city—no winding canals, no centuries-old windmills spinning in the breeze. Instead, it’s a city in motion, where the future is being designed, quite literally. Dubbed the Netherlands’ City of Light thanks to its Philips heritage, Eindhoven has evolved into a creative powerhouse, brimming with innovation, bold architecture, and a thriving indie scene.

We especially love its industrial edge—raw, unpolished, and buzzing with creativity. This is where history meets high-tech, where old warehouses morph into cultural hubs, and where Dutch Design Week transforms the city every October. Take Strijp-S, once a Philips factory complex, now a dynamic district of design studios, concept stores, and buzzing cafés, perfectly capturing Eindhoven’s reinvention. If you have a soft spot for groundbreaking ideas, futuristic structures, and cafés that double as design exhibits, this is your kind of place.

And because we know you’re curious, we’ll take you on a virtual tour of the city’s must-visit spots. First stop? The BlobEindhoven’s answer to the question: What if architecture could bend reality?

If buildings could dream, The Blob would be deep in a sci-fi reverie. This curvy, glass-covered structure in the heart of Eindhoven looks like it was plucked straight from the futureor at least from a designer’s wildest imagination.

Designed by Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas, The Blob isn’t just eye candy; it’s home to shops and creative spaces, seamlessly blending form and function. Whether you’re here to admire its fluid lines or simply grab a coffee nearby, The Blob is a must-see for architecture lovers and the aesthetically curious alike.

Ready for a coffee break?

Opposite the futuristic glass building The Blob, you’ll find The Happiness Café—a happy place for breakfast lovers. Here, you can enjoy fresh, organic and healthy dishes all day. It’s hard to choose, but we go for the Happiness Bowl and pancakes!

The Pastryclub, which is housed in the old Philips machine room, is a hotspot in the Strijp-S neighbourhood that everyone with a sweet tooth loves to visit. This is where indulgent treats meet industrial charm, making it an aesthetic delight for the eyes and the palate.

Fifth NRE is a cosy hotspot with its own coffee roastery, a stylish restaurant and a hidden cocktail bar. Whether you’re starting your day with a perfectly brewed coffee or ending it with a craft cocktail, this is a place (in fact, five places in one) not to miss in Eindhoven.

Strijp-S district

Once a restricted industrial hub for Philips employees, Strijp-S has transformed into a vibrant centre of creativity. Here, cutting-edge workspaces house innovative companies, independent shops showcase local brands, and the air is filled with the irresistible aroma of fresh food and coffee from Instagram-worthy cafés and restaurants. It’s the perfect spot to take in Eindhoven’s artistic and trendsetting spirit.

Our picks for food & drinks

The former Philips energy centre is now home to the hip Radio Royaal restaurant, where you can enjoy delicious Franco-German cuisine. Do you like a great case of industrial redesign? With its vast 1,300 sqm of vibrant atmosphere, there’s bound to be a table for you!

With its stylish interior and buzz-worthy menu, Thomas is a favourite far beyond Eindhoven. The concept? Shared dining with beautifully plated small bites, served in the striking Dinner Tree. Even the cocktails get the same stunning treatment—perfect for a lively evening out!

Don’t know what you fancy? Then the Down Town Gourmet Market is just right for you. You’ll find a wide variety of stalls offering an exciting mix of international dishes. Take a stroll first to explore all the options—otherwise, you might miss out on something delicious.

Notable events

GLOW

For one week every November, Eindhoven transforms into an open-air light festival that makes the city shinequite literally. GLOW turns streets, buildings and even waterways into glowing artworks, with installations from top international light artists. Expect everything from immersive projections on historic facades to futuristic light sculptures that look like they’ve beamed in from another galaxy. If you thought Eindhoven was creative by day, just wait until you see it at night.

DUTCH DESIGN WEEK

One of the most anticipated events on the creative calendar, Dutch Design Week (DDW) is where design gets bold, experimental, and sometimes downright mind-bending. Every October, Eindhoven turns into a giant creative playground, with over 2,600 designers showcasing ideas that push boundaries. Think biodegradable fashion, smart cities and furniture that looks like it belongs on Mars. Unlike your typical design fairs, DDW isn’t about the trends of today—it’s about what could change the way we live, work, and think in the future. If you love innovation with a dash of surprise, this is the event to visit.

Unique museums in Eindhoven

No Philips, no Eindhoven as we now know. Step into the Philips Museum, where Gerard Philips’ first light bulb sparked a tech revolution in 1891. With interactive exhibits and stories from former employees, it’s a fun and fascinating visit for all ages—perfect for curious minds and little inventors alike!

Ever wanted to fire arrows, flip burgers, or fly over cliffs—all in one day? At Enversed, Europe’s largest VR center, you can! Slip on a headset and immerse yourself in mind-blowing virtual worlds, from epic games to VR escape rooms. Find it on the 7th floor of the Vreemgebouw in Strijp-S!

A must-see for art lovers, the Van Abbemuseum has been showcasing modern and contemporary art since 1936, always finding new ways to impress. From striking exhibitions to Braille and touchable artworks for visually impaired visitors—even the elevator is part of the experience.

What to do in the region

Ready for more adventure? Take your exploration beyond the city with these three unique activities that’ll leave you in awe.

Hop on a bike and cruise down the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Cycle Path, where the pavement literally glows. Inspired by The Starry Night, artist Daan Roosegaarde created this light installation using sun-charged stones that light up after dark. The result? A cycling experience that feels like floating through a painting. Bonus: It’s part of the Van Gogh cycle route, connecting spots from the painter’s life—including nearby Nuenen, where he painted The Potato Eaters. Art, adventure and a little magic—all on two wheels.

Want to walk in Van Gogh’s footsteps? In Nuenen, you practically can. This little village near Eindhoven is dotted with 24 sites linked to the artist—from his old stomping grounds to landscapes he sketched. At the Vincentre Museum, you’ll dive into his life, complete with a light lab that lets you see the world through his colour-obsessed eyes.

Stroll the Van Gogh Route, check out the Van Gogh Church and take in the scenery that fuelled his genius. And because great art consumes energy, refuel with homemade apple pie at Knus bij Marie or go full Impressionist with a lakeside meal at ParkPaviljoen Laarbeek.

History buffs, this is for you! At Eindhoven’s PreHistoric Village (preHistorisch Dorp), the past isn’t just told—it’s lived. This open-air museum takes you through six eras, from hunter-gatherers and Roman settlers to medieval traders and the days of the Eighty Years’ War.

Meet costumed villagers, try ancient crafts, and see history come to life. It’s hands-on, family-friendly and perfect for curious minds of all ages. Just one thing to note—it closes for the winter, so plan your visit accordingly.

Useful tips for Eindhoven

  • Best time to visit: Eindhoven shines year-round, but for the best weather and colourful tulips, visit in spring (April to June). Choose autumn (September to November) if you’re into design and innovation.

  • Getting there: Eindhoven is easily accessible by train and bus from other major Dutch cities, with regular connections to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht. If you’re flying in, Eindhoven Airport is just a 15-minute drive from the city centre, and there are also direct bus routes that take you there in under 30 minutes.

  • Where to stay: It’s an easy one.

  • Local customs: The Dutch are friendly but value their personal space, so a simple “Hallo” or “Hoi” goes a long way! If you’re biking, remember to ring your bell when overtaking others. And don’t forget to try a Stroopwafel and Worstenbroodjes—two local favourites.
